CALIFORNIA WATER CONTROL BOARD—SAN FRANCISCO REGION
BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES
FILTRATION
Purpose:
A cost-effective method to remove fine sediments such as clays from stormwater runoff, sediment ponds, and excavated areas on construction sites using high efficiency wound filter cartridges.
Application:
- To remove fine sediments not settled in sediment basins
- Wherever sediment laden water is pumped from construction sites
- To provide security against discharge of heavily sediment laden water from overflow in sediment basins or from automatic pumping
- As a pretreatment, to remove sediments from hydrocarbon contaminated ground and surface water
Limitations:
- Will not remove colloidal clays
- Requires a pump to process water through system
- Is not an efficient treatment of water with heavy sediment loads. Recommend a weir tank or sand filter as pretreatment where feasible.
- Adequate erosion and sediment control measures are to be considered first whenever possible
Installation Guidelines:
- Draw water into the filters from a floating suction inlet or gravel packed wellpoint
- Size filter unit according to maximum anticipated flows
- Determine if filter unit can be shut down for filter changeout or maintenance—if not, increase capacity
- Ensure pump can provide required pressures at required flow rates
- Minimize undercutting or down gradient impact at discharge by use of an appropriate energy dissipater such as rocks, gravel bags, or perforated pipe.
Inspection and Maintenance:
- Periodically check operating pressures and flows during operation
- Ensure that the discharge is not causing erosion
- Change filter cartridges as pressures increase or discharge water quality deteriorates
